Let me be absolutely clear. No. let me refer you to Bob Marley, ‘Who the cap fits, let them wear it’
Some people do not like the word ‘stupid‘, when it refers to them and what they do. A former teacher of mine often said “Vilification is no substitute for accurate denigration.” Put simply, like Bob said, if the hat fits, wear it.
I usually know what words mean, so do not use them casually. Merriam-Webster defines ‘stupid’ as follows:
having or showing a lack of ability to learn and understand things;
not sensible or logical;
not able to think normally because you are drunk, etc.
So, get over yourselves and find your size!
UWI Mona witnessed an alleged attack by a young man on a female student, a few days ago. Just a few days prior to that, the Administation of the University had gone on record, on the radio with Cliff Hughes, saying that a study by a former lecturer there on sexual harassment and gender-based violence ‘lacked evidence’ to support its claims. It then doubled down, as gamblers do, and went into print in The Gleaner, stating that it totally rejects that sexual harassment or gender-based violence is rampant’ on the campus.
Then, the boy threw the rock a the girl and bust her head open and she had to go to the University Hospital. Awkward!
I’m not a psychologist, but I think the University Administration was in the process of denial. Deny, deny, deny. Shut your eyes. Cover your ears. Lalalalalalalala!
Let’s be generous and say that the University is run by intelligent and well-intentioned individuals. Let us also remember that it is a place of higher learning, and academic rigour. Let us also say that they are trying to feel the pulse of the nation. One of the phrases it used about UWI is that the campus is a microcosm of the country. So, then, how could it possibly be that such violence was not rampant, when such behaviour is rampant in the country? Eh, stupid, answer that.
Whatever one may think of the PM, she has been a stalwart opponent of violence against women and has been championing against it for decades. Why? Because it’s not rampant? Only stupid people think that, stupid.
People are constantly insulted because bureaucrats are stupid and act with stupidity and ignore the claims of people, and ignore the evidence that is right in front of their stupid faces.
When your daughter comes home crying and bleeding from a head wound inflicted by a boy who threw a rock at her, or claiming that some boy has groped her, or that a man has followed her home, you start to get a little uncomfortable and think that maybe a problem exists? Now, stupid, you have evidence?
Somewhere in our complicated history from being slaves and children of colonial masters, we have lost the ability to own blame. Look at any worker in Jamaica when presented with a problem and asked to take responsibility for a failing. Eyes drop, or shift away, and silence follows. Thankfully, the foot shuffling seems under control.
Somehow, all of that pent-up intelligence in the ‘ivory tower’ couldn’t figure it out?
I’ve been back in Jamaica less than two years, and I have heard stories of women and girls being attacked at UWI and I have no particular reason to search out the stories, but people I know who are on the campus often tell me such things. Why? Because they like the embarrassment or notoriety? Don’t be stupid!
